Urban Horticulture
Website: ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer

Part of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and housed at North Carolina State University, Urban Horticulture’s primary goal is to develop educational materials for the horticultural agents and Master Gardener volunteers in its 100-county extension centers. The center’s website offers a wealth of consumer resources for home gardeners, children, retail garden centers and non-profit organizations on everything about growing fruit, flowers, trees, houseplants, lawns, vegetables and woody ornamentals.

Master Gardener volunteers play an important role in Urban Horticulture’s local Cooperative Extension Center. They are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs and gardens. Volunteers provide unbiased, research-based educational assistance and programs in horticulture and environmental issues to the gardening public. Participants in the program must complete a specialized training program, pass an examination and volunteer on a regular basis.

Here are just a few notable items on Urban Horticulture’s site worth checking out:

  • Plant Factsheets – More than 400 handy fact sheets on specific plants, including images, cultivars and cultural information.
  • Hort on the Internet – Over 5,000 links to websites organized into 50 categories.
  • Consumer Hort Leaflets – Downloadable leaflets on growing fruits, vegetables, house plants, flowers, trees and shrubs.
