New Technology Allows Parents to Track Student Diet

A new technology available to Moore County Schools allows parents to track what their children are purchasing in the school cafeteria.

The Internet website www.lunchprepay.com provides access to a 45-day history of what students are buying for breakfast and lunch. For a $10 annual fee, parents get 24/7 secure access to their student’s meal history, as well as the ability to prepay for school meals.

“Childhood obesity has become a major concern throughout our nation. Anything that makes it easier for parents to monitor what their children are eating is a step in the right direction,” said Amanda Cagle, Child Nutrition Director for Moore County Schools.

Moore County Schools Child Nutrition Program, a non-profit operation employing 108 people, operates 21 cafeterias serving over 8,775 meals per day – approximately 2,285 breakfasts and 6,490 lunches. “We operate the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program in all of our schools,” said Cagle. “Moore County Schools Child Nutrition takes great pride in providing student friendly, nutritionally balanced meals at a reasonable cost. We also provide a nutrition education piece for students as we seek to introduce them to healthier meal time and snack choices for a better way of life.”

The lunchprepay.com website was developed by Education Management Systems, Inc. (EMS), a K-12 administrative software company headquartered in Wilmington, NC. EMS develops, distributes and supports school accounting and food service management software in schools throughout the United States.
